To make this scenario functioning, you need WinZIP or another zipping utility. Unzip the files to a new directory inside your "..\civ2\scenario" directory, for example "..\civ2\scenario\RiverWar", where ..\ stands for the directory in which you have installed Civilization II. While unzipping, make sure you select the option "use folder names" or something similar, depending on the zipping program you use, to retain the file structure as intended.

If you have Multiplayer Gold (MGE), you can now start the game, select "Start a scenario", browse to the new folder and start to play. If you have FW, you should first run the program "MGEtoFW.bat" located in the "..\civ2\scenario\RiverWar" directory. Alternatively, you can do the following:

  • rename the file events2f.txt => events2.txt

  • rename the file gamefw.txt  => game.txt

  • rename the file labelsfw.txt => labels.txt

If you have completed all the steps, you can start Civilization II as usual, select "Start a scenario", browse to the appropriate subdirectory (\scenario\RiverWar) and click "OK".

As some windows require a lot of space on the screen, it is advised that you switch your desktop to at least 800x600 before starting.

After the scenario has loaded, you will be asked to fill in a few things. Please choose to play ONLY the British and Egyptian forces, no Mahdists (Dervishes) and especially no French (their role is purely supportive and used in just one event in this scenario). Also make sure you selected the rank of General (the only rank with no "-").

This scenario makes use of multiple events files. This means you will have to do a few things halfway the scenario. Don't worry, it's very easy, and you will be told exactly what to do. Simply save the game as "RIVERWAR.SAV" (exactly this name, not something different), go to the folder in your "..\civ2\scenarios\RiverWar" subfolder, and start the program "events.bat". This will allow the events part 2 to be loaded. If you wish to start the scenario for a second time, you'll have to start this same program and type in 1 instead of 2.

Alternatively, you can also change it manually (remember to keep a copy of the original before renaming):

Step 1:

  • rename events2.txt to events.txt to change to part 2

  • rename events1.txt to events.txt to change to part 1

Step 2:

  • drag the file RIVERWAR.SAV on top of the file delevents.txt and release your mouse button.

or ...

  • go to DOS, go to the riverwar directory, and type in: "delevents riverwar.sav".
